In 1788, the British First Fleet, commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip, arrived in Australia to establish the first penal colony, marking the beginning of European colonization. Key events included arriving at Botany Bay (18–20 January), moving to Sydney Cove (26 January), and formally proclaiming the colony of New South Wales on 7 February.
Key Events in 1788:
18–20 January: The 11 ships of the First Fleet arrive at Botany Bay.
26 January: The fleet moves to Port Jackson and lands at Sydney Cove, raising the British flag.
26 January (Modern Day): This date is now celebrated as Australia Day, or observed by many Indigenous Australians as Invasion Day or Survival Day.
7 February: The formal proclamation of the Colony of New South Wales occurs, with Arthur Phillip sworn in as Governor.
Impact: The arrival began the displacement of the Eora people and introduced diseases like smallpox, which caused high mortality rates among Indigenous populations.
Globally, 1788 was also notable for the ratification of the US Constitution by Connecticut on January 9 and the continued exploration of the Pacific by the French La Pérouse expedition..
